Ischia is known as the Green Isle because of its lush green vegetation and it is also the only place in the area with real sandy beaches. It is a volcanic island dominated by Mount Epomeo. Our tour tokes you over to Ischia by hydrofoil a journey of one hour across the Bay of Naples. On arrival you will be given a gui¬ded tour by coach around the whole island and stops will be made ci all the pla¬ces of particular interest. The afternoon is yours far shopping or relaxing on the beach, before cruising back to Sorrento. Return to the hotels.
Pompei holds an intense fascination for visitors today. Following the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in The year 79 A.D. Pompei lay buried for hundreds of years. The town is high on the list of Wonders and the World and the excavations, begun in the 18th century, are still being carried out today. Our guide will take you slowly through some of the ancient streets af Pompei where you can see baths, forums and villas built by the prosperous Romans in the year 80 B.C. Marvel at the fabulously preserved frescoes which adorned the walls and floors of the villas. Even if your interests do not lie in history, this is an archeolo¬gical site that you cannot be failed to ha impressed by. Mount Vesuvius dominates the Bay of Naples and it is the only active volcano (with Etna) on the mainland of Europe. The slopes were once covered with vineyards and woods and provided an innocent looking backdrop for the bustling town below. The coach will take you to within 1.000 metres of the top of the Vesuvius and from there you can walk lo the very top and admire the splendid panoramic views across the bay. From the blackened crater rises a single plume of smoke, a reminder that the volcano is only sleeping for now... Reminder: comfortable, closed in shoes and your camera. Return to the hotel.
Our journey tokes us along the gorgeous coastal road through Castellammare di Stabia and out along the motorway lo Herculaneum which was destroyed Along with Pompei in 79 A.D., and rediscovered in 1709. lt was a residential town sur¬rounded by the villas of the wealthy Romans. When the catastrophe of 79 AD occurred Herculaneum was submerged under o torrent of mud and lava which har¬dened into o soft tufa (a kind of coarse rock) that preserved many of the timber features and household objects which can ho seen today. A large portion of the old Herculaneum is still buried under the modern town and even today excavations are going on lo discover what treasures lie buried under the rock, to the extent that some families are being rehoused so work con continue. Return to the hotel.
The "Amalfi Drive" is one of the most spectacular in Europe and from Sorrento, the winding cliff top rood offers breathtaking panoramic views at every turn and inspires unforgettable impressions. Stop above Positano, splendid jewel of this coastline, with white villas perched dramatically on the steep hillside. We proceed lo Amalfi, Marine Republic, which gives its name to the whole coast on which it lies. The unmistakeable cluster of white tightly packed houses rising up the hill-side is dominated by the beautiful Cathedral which stands superbly on the top of a great flight of steps leading up from the main square. Housed in the magnificent Cathedral are the remains of the Patron Saint of Amalfi as well as Scotland Saint Andrew. Stop in Ravello and visit the Villa Rufolo which gave the musician Richard Wagner the inspiration to create one of his most famous works. Return to the hotel.
